A QUIET HELLO!

Just a heads up that I'm going to start posting again. There's so many ways to use the internet on a daily basis that it can hurt your brain trying to keep up with everything. So I'm going to start using this blog (and my other blog JAMESTALKALOT MOVIES)

I kinda of got sidetracked like most people the past year or 2 with the likes of Twitter and Facebook and the like, but here I am and here I will be for a while.

This will be my online hub where I'll link to and talk about this that and the next... Excited? No? Well you should be...

Thanks to my good friend Ray (you can find his blog over at RayDvD Film Blog) who has inspired me to start blogging again. Cheers Ray!

Anyway! Hope you find something that will be on interest to you if you happen to come across this blog and if not? There's no shortage of sites to fill your boots with.

Adisokie the noo!

I'M BACK!!!! REALLY!!!

Yes your glasses are not failing you, I'm back! So what happened? I thought you were already back?

Well It's been a year of ups and downs for sure, My HD TV broke. At the end of May/start of June my laptop broke (Just got it fixed a few days ago) but the biggest thing that happened by far is my dads ongoing ill health since Nov last year, he's been on deaths door more than a few times and I've pretty much been living in a hospital for weeks at a time.

I'm going to be frank and say it's been one hell of a shit year at times, but for every down there's been an up and the biggest up was my wee sister Nicola, my brother in law and there 3 kids, my wonderful wee nieces and nephew moving just a few doors up the road from my house, Aug 2 this year (2010 that is:D). They really have helped keep me going :D

If you don't know by now I'm a full time carer for my dad, he's paralysed from the chest down, he's blind in 1 eye, he only has 1 lung, he now has a weak heart, has suffered multiple Pulmonary edemas and now he is diabetic (type 2) so I've been trying to manage that for him for the past 3 weeks and feel I'm on the way to being a food expert LOL

So I'm back online! I hope for the foreseeable future that things are going to keep going well or at the very least just keep ticking along. Online is my wee escape from day to day stresses as it is for loads of people. For me if I'm online that means things are going as well as can be expected and by God that's enough for me :D

See you all around various corners of the net from now on *touch wood*, this will be my hub to all that's happening with me, and over time, I would like to link up everything that interests me online and off. I've got a lot of catching up to do, I kind of feel like I'm online for the first time again... Anyway!

Chow for now!

CARERS WEEK AND JAYDE IS 1

First of happy birthday to my wee niece Jayde who is 1 today. 1 already???

1stbday

Now onto Carers week that runs from the 8th–14th June ‘09

I’m one of the 6 million carers in the UK, here’s some stats about carers and my take on it from my experience to date (JT: MY COMMENTS)

(from http://www.carersweek.org/)

The results of two new surveys have been announced for the start of Carers Week 2009.

A survey conducted by YouGov questioned over 2,000 members of the public about their beliefs and attitudes towards carers.

The key finding was that the public rank carers alongside the emergency services in terms of their contribution to society. Six out of seven people (86%) believe that carers make a valuable contribution, behind only nurses (91%) and firefighters (90%).

(JT: THAT’S A NICE STAT RIGHT THERE, THAT’S A NICE START)

The overwhelming majority also agree that carers’ benefits are far too low, with over three-quarters (76%) stating that the current level of Carers’ Allowance is unreasonable.

(JT: IT’S A JOKE TO BE HONEST)

But when asked to estimate the number of carers in the UK, 8 out of 10 were unable to pick the correct figure of 6 million, with almost three-quarters (71%) underestimating by over 4.5 million.

(JT: NOT A SURPRISE REALLY, WHO REALLY THINKS ABOUT CARERS THAT MUCH? WHO WONDERS HOW MANY OF US THERE ARE?)

Meanwhile a Carers Week survey highlighted the shocking number of carers who have been pushed to extreme levels of stress and depression as a result of caring.

The results also revealed that carers feel they go unrecognised or ignored by different groups in society, and this has a significant negative impact on their lives.

Large numbers of carers say they have been pushed to extreme levels of stress and depression as a result of caring. Almost three-quarters (74%) of carers say that they feel that they have reached breaking point.

(JT: I’VE NOT REACHED BREAKING POINT. BUT I’VE BEEN CLOSE, I’VE HIT MY LOWEST LOW AND I GOT THROUGH IT. WHAT DOES NOT KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER AS THEY SAY.

IT’S SUCH A TOUGH JOB AT TIMES MADE SOOO MUCH HARDER BY THE LACK OF SUPPORT FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS, IT’S NOT EASY TO FEEL LIKE YOUR JOB DOES NOT MATTER TO MOST PEOPLE OUTSIDE YOU AND THE PERSON/S YOU CARE FOR. IT’S A CONSTANT BATTLE NOT TO LOSE YOURSELF TO THE PITFALLS OF DEPRESSION AND END UP NEEDING CARE YOURSELF.

IF YOU’RE NOT STRONG, YOU FAIL AT THE JOB YOU SET OUT TO DO. CARER IS NOT A DIRTY WORD. BE PROUD! BE STRONG!)

Over a third (41%) of carers stated that ‘frustration with bureaucracy’ pushed them to breaking point, often the complex and lengthy procedures for welfare benefits, healthcare and social services. Other factors include a deterioration in the health of the person being cared for, lack of sleep and financial worries.

For most carers, ‘practical support’ would – or did – make the difference when they were at breaking point, with ‘just having someone to talk to’ a close second. Nearly a third (31%) say that more money would make a difference – hardly surprising given that Carers Allowance is the lowest benefit of its kind at just £53.10 per week.

(JT: I’M LUCKY, AT THE MOMENT I HAVE NO FINANCIAL WORRIES, I DON’T GET MUCH MONEY AT ALL, BUT I DON’T SPEND WHAT I DON’T HAVE, I HAVE VERY LITTLE DEPT, BUT IT’S NOT BEEN EASY. THE RECESSION HAS MADE ME FEEL BETTER THOUGH, YES BETTER? HOW CRAZY IS THAT? KNOWING THAT EVERYBODY IS NOW IN THE SAME BOAT AS MYSELF WITH VERY LITTLE CASH AND HAVING TO SHOP IN SALES ALL THE TIME MAKES ME SMILE, IN FACT, I NOW GET ASKED HOW I GET SO MUCH FOR SO LITTLE. MY ANSWER? SHOP SMART! BARGAIN HUNT AND HAVE PATIENCE! IF YOU’RE A CARER, YOU HAVE THAT IN SPADES ALREADY.

MORE MONEY WOULD BE GREAT BUT CARERS HAVE LEARNED THE HARD WAY TO LIVE ON NEXT TO NOTHING AND STILL GET BY, WE ARE HARD WORKING PEOPLE WHO DESERVE RESPECT, £53.10 IS NOT RESPECT IN 2009, IT WAS NOT RESPECT IN 1990! )

A massive 8 out of 10 carers feel that their role is overlooked or ignored by professionals, who include GPs, social workers and hospital staff. Three-quarters of all carers also feel that their role is unrecognised by family members and friends. Almost two-thirds (63%) of carers say that their lives are made ‘much more difficult’ as a result of being overlooked or ignored.

More than half (54%) say that being overlooked has affected their health and a slightly higher number (55%) say that it has left them worse off financially. The ten charities who organise Carers Week are calling on the Government to do more to support carers, along with other organisations such as the NHS, improve carers' lives.

(JT: THIS IS IT, THIS IS THE HARDEST THING (FOR ME AT LEAST) THIS IS THE THING THAT REALLY GETS ON MY NERVES TO THE POINT I WANT TO SCREAM AT TIMES, HAVING FRIENDS AND FAMILY GIVE LITTLE TO NO SUPPORT OR RESPECT, HAVING FRIENDS AND FAMILY NOT EVEN RECOGNIZE THAT YOU HAVE A JOB!!!! ONLY YESTERDAY IN A CONVERSATION WITH ONE OF MY SISTERS I YET AGAIN HAD TO ENDURE GETTING TOLD I DON’T HAVE A JOB. I WAS TALKING ABOUT RAISING £4600 TO GET A RAMP FOR MY DAD, I WAS TOLD BY HER A BANK WOULD NOT GIVE ME MONEY BECAUSE I DON’T WORK??? I COULD HAVE GOT MAD AND HAD A FALLOUT WITH MY SISTER FOR BEING SO BLUNT YET AGAIN…

BUT!

THE SAD THING IS, AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME SHE’S RIGHT, AND IT’S ONLY BECAUSE OUR GOVERNMENT DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THAT WE WORK!!! IT’S A TOTAL JOKE AND IT NEEDS TO CHANGE (AND IT WILL!!!). HOW CAN FRIENDS AND FAMILY RESPECT CARERS WHEN OUR OWN GOVERNMENT IS SAYING WE DON’T WORK? THEY SAY IT BY DOING NEXT TO NOTHING FOR US. THEY DON’T PAY US AND THEY DON’T LET US HOLD OUR HEADS HIGH AND SAY PROUDLY THAT “I AM A CARER AND IT’S A JOB I’M PROUD OFF”

BEING A CARER IS ONE OF THE HARDEST (BOTH PHYSICAL/MENTAL OR BOTH, JOBS YOU CAN DO. YOU CAN GIVE UP SO MUCH OF YOU LIFE TO THE PERSON YOU CARE FOR THAT YOU HAVE NONE LEFT OF YOUR OWN.

YOU LOSE?

YOU LOSE FAMILY, YOU LOSE FRIENDS, YOU LOSE RESPECT. YOU CAN GET TRAPPED IN A BUBBLE AND FORGOTTEN ABOUT, YOU GIVE YOUR ALL AND YOU GET LITTLE BACK FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD.

YOU GAIN?

YOU GAIN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT YOU’RE DOING ONE OF THE MOST NOBLE HUMAN BEING WORTHY THINGS ON THIS PLANET! AND 6 MILLION OTHER CARERS, AND ALL THOSE THEY CARE FOR WILL TELL YOU THAT’S A FACT!

SO HOLD YOUR HEAD HIGH AND DON’T GIVE UP, FRIENDS MAY STOP VISITING, FAMILY MAY ALSO STOP. THEY MAY TRY TO BRING YOU DOWN AND BATTLE WITH YOU, YOU WILL PROBABLY GET MADE TO FEEL THAT YOU ARE NOTHING (AND PROBABLY ALREADY HAVE).

IF YOU HAVE FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO ARE THERE FOR YOU, THEN THEY ARE AMAZING PEOPLE. IT’S A SHAME THEY ARE SO FEW AND FAR BETWEEN.

JUST KNOW THAT WHAT YOU DO… WHAT I DO! IS A JOB, IT’S NOT JUST A JOB, IT’S ONE OF THE BEST JOBS OUT THERE. YOU GIVE UP A LOT AND THAT’S A FACT, BUT YOU ARE AN ANGEL TO THE PERSON YOU CARE FOR FOR… AN ANGEL

CARER = LOVE

LOVE US BACK!)

So there you have it, I’m a carer and I’m proud to be one. I don’t ask for much and if there’s one thing I would wish for, it would be, to just be respected by my family (all of them) and to have some friends who understand that you can’t just go out when you please, still be there for me when I can.

Being a carer is a JOB! being paid next to nothing does not make it any less of a job. Give every carer at least that respect. Every time you tell a carer they have no job, a bit of them dies inside.

Carers are tough, we have to be! But we’re still only human.

Who cares for Carers? That’s the million dollar question. Let that answer be you!

James

THE OC COMPLETE R2 (UK) DVD BOOKSET

I made this video yesterday because there’s SO many pics to add to my site in the usual way.

I had added some music from the OC soundtracks. Just some music bites, but WMG said no to it on youtube. I put in a dispute with the fair use act of 1976, but decided to crap out of it and just delete the video and upload another one without sound, then select some music from youtube (it’s not very good)

It’s better watching the HQ version, so click on HQ :-D.

I’m going to make a lot more of these videos (and try to find some better legal music haha)

If you’ve been sitting on the fence thinking about getting this set, well I hope there’s enough info here to help you decide either way whether or not to buy it (this will be the aim of most of the videos I do in the near future)

Enjoy! Although the music really does suck!… (It’s what volume control was invented for though lol)

EDIT: I updated the music to something a bit less sore on the ears :-P

1 YEAR SINCE MY MUM GAVE UP CIGS/MY BIRTHDAY and MARCH DVD UPDATE PART 2

First off, I can’t believe it’s been 1 year since my no smokingmum took the plunge to stop smoking. She started to quit at this time last year and stopped 100% on the 6th of April 2008. So, just want to say, WELL DONE MUM!!!

--------------------------------------------

So today was my birthday, after my family being a little bit splintered over the past few years, it was very nice to have my family around on my birthday. I had a great day, so thanks to all my family for the gifts but most important, for just being there. Love you guys! xxxxxxxxx

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last, but by no means least. Part 2 of my March dvd update.

MARCH DVD UPDATE PART 1

Yep it’s only part 1, I’ve still got a lot more to get before this month is out. It’s birthday month you see, and also the fact that so many dvds on my wishlist have been crazily cheap, so I’ve had to get them even though I have no time at the moment to watch them (I’m working my way through Tru Calling complete series at the moment and I got that for £6 odd a few years back, yea only now watching it haha, but it’s ace and I’m on disc 4 after a a week)

I did watch all season 3 of the 4400, and have 2 discs of Season 4 left (love this show, why cancel it? Arrrg!). I also watched Stardust, the Postman, Walk Hard so I did at least get through some of these.

Don’t ask what the booklet is doing there next to the 4400 season 4, maybe I put it there to keep it all even? LOL! Naaaa it was just me being daft as usual!

Part 2 will be soonish :D

HAMMER HORROR AND CARRY ON BOOKS

Today I received the following 2 great books from amazon.co.uk

The Hammer Story: The Authorised History of Hammer Films (hardcover)

and

The Carry on Story: 50th Anniversary Edition

Both very lavish books I got to go along with my Carry On DVD collection and Hammer DVD collection. These 2 books are pretty definitive compliments to go along with those 2 dvd boxsets.

Quick note to Amazon.co.uk for the great customer service they give. One of my books dropped in price by a few quid after I ordered it (about 10 hours). I could not cancel and re-order as it was getting ready for shipping. A quick email to amazon sorted it, not only did they refund me the diff, but they sent my books out to me in under 24 hours from order and it was via the free supersaving option.. I was not expecting them for a good few days, but they were posted out this morning and turned up around 3:15pm. FANTASTIC SERVICE AMAZON UK!

Anyway here’s some pics of these superb books.

FIRE SAFETY

Logo

So today I had a visit from our local fire fighters to look over our home, ask lots of questions about fire safety and it’s a been real eye opener I can tell you that.

I’m very safe when it comes to fire, always have been ever since the house a few doors from me burnt to the ground and all the family was killed (kids as well). As I stood there helpless that night, I was from that moment on, forever conscious of how easy fire can spread and kill.

So I take fire prevention very serious, and try to do as much sensible things as I can think of, so a fire does not break out and destroy our lives.

No overloading of sockets, close as many doors at night as you can, turn off the power to things you don’t need. You know? All the common sense things.

One thing I had not thought of though was my fire escape, sure it’s a simple enough thing you might ask? Yea, and for most it’s a no brainer, but the problem lies if you’re disabled or have disabled living in your house. What then? Has everything been done to make sure they can get out safe and sound? Do you have a fire plan AND a backup plan should that fail. Does everybody in your family know the plan so you don’t all try different things?

I can only go with my situation, but here it is. -

My dad has his own extension to the house (he is paralyzed and blind in his left eye), it has a fire door that can’t be closed fully at night because he is claustrophobic. He has no way to get out of bed without help and I sleep upstairs. If there’s a fire through the day and he is in his wheelchair, he still can’t get out because the ramp is via the kitchen (where fire is most likely to start in the first place) and at this moment in time we’re fighting the local council to get a ramp at the other door, they won’t allow it, and it’s been an ongoing battle, not just for quality of life for my dad but also for fire safety.

If a fire breaks out through the night, because his fire door will be open, the smoke has a good chance of getting to him (I keep a big long piece of wood beside him so he can close the door, but it’s not ideal)

If I can’t get to him (fire on the stairs) I would have to make my way out the upstairs window onto his extension roof, smash his window and try that way.

At this moment in time I pretty much can’t leave my dad on his own for a long period of time, even if he is in his wheelchair, simply because he CAN’T get outside by himself because of a stupid council rule. It’s crazy, and it’s highlighted all the more by the visit today from the fire depot.

There’s not a lot they could do about it either, although they have given a lot of leads to who can help and have made a few phone calls to push for a ramp to be added that could save his life and add some more quality to it.

So thanks to the firemen who really took the time to listen and help as much as they can. I repay the favour by posting up the phone number for them and encourage anybody who has no clue about what’s safe and what’s not when it comes to fire, to phone the number/visit the site and if you don’t live in that area (and as it’s the web, this country even), please contact your local fire department and see if they offer a similar service.

By just picking up simple tips, you could not only save your own life, but save the life of your family.

PHILLIP SCHOFIELD AND TWITTER

Twitter! I’ve been on it for ages, it’s a great wee simple thing that I use mostly as a live feed for news updates on my website.

It seems word is spreading about Twitter though and the other day while watching my daily dose of ‘This Morning’ I watched as Phillip Schofield sent a live tweet from the ‘This Morning’ studio.

I added Phil as a friend along with the +1000’s of others since I knew it was really him and not a fake (All people online are Aliens unless proven otherwise:-)

Well today I decided to send Phil a message and not only did I get a very nice reply back from him, he also added me as a twitter friend (following). This was extra cool because out of the 13000 odd people that was following him he had only added 245(at the time before I was added) that he was following.

Not only that, but my picture is (at time of posting ) on the main page of his page:-D

To follow Phillip on Twitter - http://twitter.com/Schofe

Yes it really IS Phillip http://www.officialphillipschofield.com/

I’ve been watching Phillip on TV since I was a kid (I’m 34 now) when he did children's TV. Gordon The Gopher also added me as a friend haha :-D

Oh the memories of my youth!
